What is epigenetics?+-

Epigenetics is the study of how cells control gene activity without changing the DNA sequence itself. The term was introduced in 1942 by embryologist Conrad Waddington, but its origins can be traced right back to the 17th century. Your genes and your DNA do not change; but how they are expressed does. One example of an epigenetic change is DNA methylation — the addition of a chemical cap to part of your DNA, which prevents certain genes from being active

Epigenetic changes are:

Powerful – they control what a stem cells can become

Dynamic – giving a sense of current, previous and future health status

Amenable to change – you CAN make a big difference through lifestyle modification, by changing things like activity levels, eating well, reducing stress, sleeping well, and not smoking.

Normal genetic testing helps you to understand your risks of illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, dementia and cancer which are fixed and you cannot change. It doesn’t take into account your lifestyle and environmental factors so can only measure your risk so well.
